The Rest of the Story

Hi All, Thanks to everyone for stopping by.

Been real busy tonight at work with very little free time.

"nanc, like if we're in a serious discussion of politics, i probably shouldn't throw in a broccoli cheese soup recipe?"

"The Merry Widow said...
How about my Creamy Broccoli-Cheddar Soup?"

NO THANK YOU PLEASE. However,......................... if you happen to have a Tex-Mex recipe for corn meal dumplings, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST IT NO MATTER WHAT THE DISCUSSION IS!!!!!!!!!

Besides, allowances are made for friends.

You see, I haven't had any since my mom passed away 2 years ago this past June 20. She was disabled and living with me, and any time we had ham, within the week she would make the dumplings from the ham drippings with corn meal, chili mix, and ham bits.

It has been a trying time for me. I work nights, and basically keep my same schedule of sleep periods.

I would always tell her when I left for work, that if I didn't see her in the morning, I would see her at the Eastern Gate. (We do the song, "Eastern Gate" in our quartet and I still break down) Always expecting that it would be me waiting on her there. (Always seem to think our mothers are immortal, almost)

Well, that Sunday the 19th, I was staying awake all night so I could sleep Monday morning and be ready for the night shift. I last talked to her about 2 a.m. when some kittens she had brought in from outside had knocked over some stuff outside her bedroom.

I staightened things up for her and she seemed to be doing fine, recovering from a kidney infection that she had from the previous week. She was even laughing at those six toed kittens that kept hampering my efforts. Of course, I was sort of putting on a show for her with those rascals. Said goodnight and told her I would see her in the morning. Little did I know.

Well, I had a habit of waiting for her to get up before going to bed and checking to see if she needed anything. I am waiting up for her and it gets past 8 a.m., and she is not up. I go to check on her, and find her by her bed on the floor. Looks as if she was coming back from the bathroom. Coroner said it was a massive heart attack and she had passed away before she even hit the floor.

The only funny (not haha funny) thing about the situation was this. She seemed to get in the last word to this crazy world. Her right arm had caught on her clothes hamper and was elevated to her side. Only one finger was extended outwards, the middle one. It was as if she was saying, screw you world, I'm going to a far better place than this.

Soooooo, if you happen to have that recipe for corn meal dumplings, I would be indebted. Never did get it from Mom. (we think they'll live forever, don't we?)

Oh by the way, has anybody heard from jbargholz from moonbatcentral? Haven't seen or heard of since we gang tackled that moonbat the last time there (lol)

So basically all I have had time for lately is a little quick reading of some of your blogspots, and managing to do a quick drive by posting, or bashing of a progessive. Hope that changes now, new responsibilities on the job have been able to be transfered to others.

This is really the first time I could write all this out without a complete meltdown. Oh by the way, a trap for the unwary in the second to last sentence.

bless your soul! you are a good son, poa. if you're not careful, you'll end up with a bunch of fussy sisters here...

i lost my dad this past april and i was pretty much okay until a couple of weeks ago when i passed the hormel canned tamales at the grocery store - one of his favorites - i couldn't get to my vehicle fast enough and boo-hoo sobbed all the way home.

you have plenty of friends in the www - we've missed you. welcome home.

i was corresponding with bargholz for quite awhile and he mentioned that he may be going to iraq with a civilian (halliburton) engineer and have seen him once in the last few months at madzionist. he'll be back with stories to tell and i hope it's soon - yes he is one of the very best at whuppin' up on libtards!

...of course, you're no slouch...

now, i'm off to research "cornmeal dumplings" - never heard of them...

nanc said...

p.s. - okay, now the second to last sentence thing - i'm not getting it - we all do that!

peedoffamerican said...

Basically it is one word in that sentence. I will be posting on it either tonight or tomorrow. Right now am going to lay my sleepy head down.

By the way, I have gotten off of the high blood pressure meds and diuretics also. Have lost 42 lbs.

Good on getting off the meds, those things are not always the best route!

Turnip Greens with Cornmeal Dumplings Recipe courtesy Paula Deen
Show: Paula's Home Cooking
Episode: Southern Comfort

3/4 pound smoked meat (smoked turkey wings are excellent)
4 quarts water
1 teaspoon House Seasoning, recipe follows
2 chicken bouillon cubes
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 bunch turnip greens with roots
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1 teaspoon sugar (optional; may be used if greens are bitter)
Cornmeal Dumplings, recipe follows

Place smoked meat in water along with House Seasoning, bouillon, and ginger. Cook over low heat for 1 1/2 hours. Strip turnip leaves free of the big stem that runs down the center of each leaf. Wash in a sink full of clean water. Drain and wash twice more, since greens can often be sandy. Peel and slice or quarter roots. Add greens to meat; cook for another 30 minutes, stirring often. Add roots and continue to cook for approximately 15 minutes, or until roots are tender. (Reserve 2/3 cup turnip liquid for the dumplings.) Add butter and sugar. Serve with dumplings.

House Seasoning:
1 cup salt
1/4 cup black pepper
1/4 cup garlic powder
Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Cornmeal Dumplings
1 cup all-purpose cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 small onion, chopped
1 egg
2/3 cup liquid from cooked turnips
Mix all ingredients together. Dipping by teaspoonfuls, gently roll batter in the palms of your hands into approximately 1-inch balls; drop into boiling turnip liquid Make sure each dumpling is completely covered in liquid by shaking the pot gently; do not stir. Boil for about 10 minutes.
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

BTW-I lost my hubby 5 years ago Nov. 29th. Give yourself time, loss of a parent or spouse is the most traumatic thing you can go through, for the majority of people. I'm not talking about things like living through a school shooting...

then i'll call you "slim"...

I LOVE PAULA DEEN! of course she'd have a cornmeal dumpling recipe - good going tmw!

peedoffamerican said...

TMW,

That's a very good try, but the operative word is TEX-MEX. I know they have chili powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper in them but I don't know what else and in what amounts. They are also made with ham stock, and taste a lot like hot tamales. I have searched the web, but have been unable to come up with anything like them. Thanks for the effort. Was haoping that one of you might have the recipe yourself. Sorry to hear about your husband.

nanc,
Sorry to hear about your dad, he would have loved the cornmeal dumplings. I lost mine to cancer March 1990, 3 months after his mother died. Thanks for the update on bargholz, if you talk to him, tell him to stop on by.

My prayers and thoughts are with you both.

nanc said...

i've been making tamales lately, perhaps i'll come up with a reasonable recipe - i do like experimenting in the kitchen...just ask those who prefer to stay away when i don my lab coat...oh yeah...i've got it going on...

The Merry Widow said...

POA-What I do, alot of times, is find a base recipe and add and substitute until I get the results I'm looking for.
A little experimentation is called for, start with the seasonings, then work on the ham drippings and bits.
You may be surprised with the results! You may recreate it perfectly!

And it's okay, my late was ready to go Home, and I promised to kick him in the fanny when I caught up with him! LOL! And that was for leaving me with 2 teens and a heap of paperwork!

nanc said...

poa - when are you going to explain the second to last sentence? i've been on the edge of my seat all day!

anonymous

HA! i knew i could get this "anonymous" comment in!

peedoffamerican said...

Hello,

Surprised me that no one started in on me about accepting the "new" "progressive" label that liberals have co-opted. That was the trap for the unwary, as it was my next post.

nanc,
It wasn't anonymous, it still shows your user ID.

tmw,
Wait until I get there, i always
did like to watch a good fanny kicking, lol.

Invite him for the weekend!
wrongheaded is a psychotic, who has done incredible damage to his brother and his wife. He delights is wallowing in his psychosis...
I like the term, 'leftista', myself. Leaves the original meaning of 'liberal' alone! And regressive is a better description of the rest!

Hello Beamish, Hello Freedomnow,

Welcome to old friends and thanks for stopping by. I was away on sabbatical all weekend and didn't have any computers around.

Freedomnow said...

Hey POA,

I hope you enjoyed your little sabbatical this weekend. If these fires come any closer I will be enjoying my week in a shelter while my prized record collection burns to ashes.

I'd better bring a bottle of whiskey with me!

peedoffamerican said...

So sorry to hear about your situation Freedomnow, I will say a special prayer that you are delivered.
